MISSION STATEMENT
Established in 1915, the Jewish Family Service is a human service organization which reflects the Jewish tradition of caring and compassion for all people in need. Through professional counseling, advocacy and educational programming, our services seek to enhance and strengthen the quality of individual, family and community life.


SERVICES
Older Adult Services
Our Staff coordinates the necessary services which allow the elderly to remain independent and self-reliant. These services include in-home help, companions, friendly visitors and telephone reassurance.

Kosher Meals On Wheels
This program, in cooperation with the Meals on Wheels Office of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, delivers kosher meals to those in need.

Free Dental Clinic
Since 1920, the free non-sectarian dental clinic has served individuals and families who are financially eligible. Located in our office, the clinic is staffed by volunteer dentists from the Scranton District Dental Society

Financial Aid and Holiday Assistance
Short-term financial aid is provided for individuals and families experiencing economic distress. The Holdiay Assistance Program ensures that the beauty of the Jewish Holidays is shared throughout the year.

Holocaust Survivor Assistance Service
Offers services which are designed to help elderly survivors of the Holocaust live their remaining years safely, with dignity, and as independently as possible. Jews who resided in European countries which were subject to Nazi rule and control between 1933 and 1945 are eligible.

Jewish Family Life Education
Our agency offers education and enrichment through lectures, guest speakers, and workshops on topics relevant to family life, Jewish identity and current issues.

Immigration / Resettlement Services
The JFS is an affiliated agency of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and Council of Jewish Federations for the resettlement of refugees and immigrants from countries of persecution and oppression. In cooperation with the financial resources of the Jewish Federation of Northeast Pennsylvania, our trained staff and many dedicated volunteers make possible the successful integration of newcomers into American society.

Counseling
The Jewish Family Service offers professional counseling for families, couples, individuals and groups. Our staff is professionally trained and our social workers are licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

Consultative Services
Other agencies and school programs may utilize the expertise of our staff consultants for specific problems, issues or projects


VOLUNTEER SERVICES
Although staffed by highly trained professional, many of our extra services at JFS are provide by volunteers:
  • Drivers and runners for Kosher Meals On Wheels
  • Friendly Visitors
  • Telephone Reassurance
  • Resettlement Volunteers
  • English as a second languange
  • HUG project
  • Dentists


SPECIAL FUNDS
The AB Cohen Passover Fund
The AB Cohen Passover Fund is specifically set up to give financial assistance for those in need during the Passover season. For more information, please contact JFS at 570-344-1186.
The Belle Cohen Memorial Fund
The Belle Cohen Memorial Fund is a fund that finances no-interest loans for eligible Jewish Students . For more information, please contact JFS at 570-344-1186
