| FEDERATION REPORTER
Prior to 1971 the, then, Scranton-Lackawanna Jewish Council included information pertinent to its operation in the Jewish Community Center's weekly Argus newsletter. As the functions of the Council expanded, it developed the Council Reporter-Argus (Argus was the Jewish Community Center newspaper since 1909). This continued until February 1982 when the Jewish Council became the Jewish Federation and the newspaper became known as the Council-Federation Reporter. In September 1982 the newspaper's name was changed to Federation Reporter and its Center section was called Argus News because people had become somewhat confused as to which agency they were referring to. In March, 1991 when the Federation and Jewish Community Center were directed by two separate executive In summer 1994 a major change was undertaken. For the first time in the history of our community, the Federation Reporter was now being published by an independent source in Vestal, New York. In the year 2000, The Scranton-Lackawawanna Jewish Federation became the Jewish Federation of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Reporter was returned to Scranton, and became the first regional Jewish newspaper for the Jewish communities of Pike, Wayne, Monroe and Lackawanna Counties. Reaching an estimated 6,000 Jewish households in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the Reporter features special sections for each Jewish Community in the new Federation. As such, it has become a central unifying force binding together the Jewish communities of Greater Scranton, Stroudsburg, Hemlock Farms, the Mount-Pocono Pines area, Honesdale, Like Ariel (The Hideout), Bushkill and Milford into a single Jewish community with a strong mandate to create a powerful Jewish presence in the Poconos for many generations to come. The Reporter is offered at no cost to Jewish households in the area and regional advertising is encouraged. For more information, call the Federation at 570-961-2300 |
