Stephen Flatow - Terrorism, Tragedy & Survival

¬Ý

Stephen Flatow is a West Orange, NJ attorney whose 20-year old daughter Alisa died as a result of severe injuries she sustained during a terrorist attack in Israel. He will be the guest of the Federation at its annual Major Gifts Brunch - Pocono UJA Dinner programs scheduled for Sunday, September 17, 2006 in Scranton (at Carlisle House) in the morning and in Stroudsburg (at Temple Israel of the Poconos) for the evening event.

"This is Stephen's second visit to our region,"said Mark Silverberg, Federation Executive Director. "The first was an emotional address he made in Bartonsville last spring and those who attended asked that he be brought back to address special events such as these," said Silverberg. "His story is a chronicle of the human spirit and is one that must be told. We know that those who will attend these Campaign events will never forget what they hear and will better understand the price that some are required to pay for the survival of a Jewish State."

In April 1995, Alisa Flatow was a student studying in Israel when her bus was rammed and detonated by a suicide bomber. Called to her side as she lay dying in the emergency ward of an Israeli hospital, Stephen came to understand the sword under which Israelis must live each day. On his return to the States, and acting under U.S. law, he and his family successfully sued the Islamic Republic of Iran (as the sponsor of the attack).

Flatow was also a key witness in the prosecution trial of Sami Al-Arien, a former University of Central Florida professor who was the chief American fundraiser for Palestinian Islamic Jihad - the group responsible for Alisa¹s death. Al-Arien has since been convicted of supporting the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and is being deported.

He will speak of these experiences.

A father of five, Flatow has been involved extensively in Jewish communal affairs for many years. He has been the guest speaker at major Campaign events across America and shares with his audiences his experiences in coping with tragedy; on how his family¹s life changed after the death of his daughter; and on how her memory and his religion brought new meaning to their lives.

We hope you can make it.
